The Class 1 English Olympiad is a friendly way for young learners to practise words, reading and simple grammar. Parents and teachers can use this guide for short, enjoyable sessions at home or in school. It explains the 2026 School Connect Olympiad (SCO) learning pathway, provides twenty original worked questions, and preserves an earlier sample paper for reference.

Class 1 English Olympiad: what children learn
The official SCO Class 1 English syllabus (2026) covers opposite words, words and meanings, masculine and feminine words, nouns, odd-one-out, jumbled words, articles (a, an, the), and animals, their young and their sounds. Start with the free Class 1 English chapter-wise learning hub for topic-linked videos and practice questions, which School Connect continues to expand.
Children develop vocabulary by spotting objects, naming feelings, listening to short stories and arranging simple words. At this age, a few meaningful questions with gentle explanation are better than long sessions of memorisation.
A practical four-week plan
- Week 1: Match five opposite-word pairs each day and discuss word meanings with pictures.
- Week 2: Find naming words around the house or classroom. Sort fruits, animals, colours and objects, and play odd-one-out.
- Week 3: Rearrange letters into simple words and practise a/an using sounds. Add animal names and their young.
- Week 4: Read a short story aloud, solve mixed questions, discuss mistakes, and try the archived sample paper as optional practice.

Read and understand a short story
Mina has a little red bag. She puts an apple and a book in it. Her friend Ali carries a blue bag. They walk to school together.
- Who has a red bag? Mina.
- What fruit is in the bag? An apple.
- Where are they going? To school.
Try asking the child to retell the story in two sentences. This builds meaning and expression, rather than guessing from isolated words. Families can also practise in their home language before trying a complete English sentence.

Historic flat fees or previous calendar dates shown in older articles may not apply to the present cycle.
Parents should review current instructions and any consent requirements before submitting a child’s details. Avoid promises of guaranteed awards, scholarships, global ranking or unrestricted mock tests unless supported by the rules for the specific cycle.
