What’s inside the 2022–23 paper?
The paper includes grouping and odd-one-out questions, picture identification, missing letters, word unscrambling, nouns and verbs, vocabulary, everyday jobs, articles, synonyms, antonyms and suitable replies in a conversation. Some items refer to a picture: look at the diagram in the original PDF rather than choosing from words alone.

| Word meaning | Choose an opposite or a similar word | “Can you use the word in a sentence?” |
| Conversation | Select a useful or polite response | “How would you answer a friend?” |
Selected 2022–23 paper answers with explanations
The following are independently checked learning explanations for straightforward text-based items from the archived PDF. They are not an official complete answer key. The PDF does not contain a clearly labelled complete answer-key section. Picture-dependent and ambiguous items are deliberately omitted.
- Q1 — Strawberry: orange, red and blue can name colours; in this grouping strawberry is the fruit. Children should explain the category.
- Q2 — Peacock: lion, tiger and bear are mammals, while a peacock is a bird.
- Q8 — Hard: the jumbled letters “Arhd” can be rearranged to form “hard”.
- Q10 — Helped: “helped” is the action word (verb) in the sentence about Isha helping someone.
- Q15 — Doctor: the person who treats patients is a doctor.
- Q31 — Happy: “happy” is close in meaning to “joy”; this is a synonym question.
- Q33 — Big: “big” is the opposite of “small”; this is an antonym question.
- Q35 — And: “I play cricket and football” joins two related actions naturally.

How parents and teachers can use the PDF
- Begin gently: read the instructions together and work through 8–10 questions without a timer.
- Encourage independent thinking: allow the child to choose an option before giving a hint.
- Discuss every mistake: ask why one answer is better and practise a similar example.
- Make a three-skill revision list: such as opposites, articles and spelling, rather than repeating the whole paper every day.
- Build stamina gradually: try a longer practice sitting only when the learner feels confident; the archive’s printed timing does not define current exam rules.
Class 1 English syllabus and newer SCO resources
The current SCO Class 1 English subject page groups study topics into opposites, word meanings, masculine/feminine words, nouns, odd one out, jumbled words, articles (a, an, the), and animals, their babies and sounds. Use its chapter resources to practise areas the paper reveals are difficult.
For 2026 Class 1 English syllabus, newer sample paper and the separate sample-paper answer key, open that SCO subject page and use its Downloads section. The dedicated Class 1 English syllabus (2026) resource is another starting point. These are separate from this page’s older 2022–23 PDF.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Class 1 English Olympiad PDF free to download?
Yes. Use the PDF link above to open or save the archived SCO 2022–23 paper.
Is this the official paper of every competition called IEO?
No. This PDF is labelled School Connect Olympiad (SCO) International English Olympiad. Other organisers may use a similar abbreviation while having their own papers, syllabus and marking rules.
Does the 2022–23 paper show the 2026 pattern?
Not necessarily. It is useful for practising English skills, but current question patterns, timing and eligibility should be checked on the official SCO exam and Class 1 resource pages.
Where is the complete official answer key?
The archived PDF does not have a clearly identified complete official answer key inside it. This article gives selected learning explanations only. The current SCO Class 1 English downloads list a separate 2026 sample-paper answer key; it should not be represented as the key to this older document.
Should a Class 1 child answer all 35 questions at once?
Not during the first practice session. Short, encouraging sets make it easier to learn unfamiliar words and discuss mistakes. Increase practice length only as confidence grows.
Suggested next step: Download the archived English paper, review a short set together, and then use the current Class 1 English learning and downloads page for more practice. No videos are needed to use this printable question-paper resource.
