Ex 1.1 – Food Variety
Variety is a major influence of energy intake, but it is not known how much foods have to vary to influence eating. Food variety represents one of the most powerful ways to increase energy intake.
Some of the resources from where we can obtain different types of food materials are:
- Fruits from plants
- Vegetables and legumes from plants
- Fish, lean meat, eggs, poultry from animals
- Pulses, whole grains, Cereals from plants
- Milk and its derivatives such as – curd, butter, cheese, cottage cheese, clarified butter from animals, etc.
Ex 1.2 – Food Materials and Sources
It may be easy for us to guess the sources of some of the ingredients like fruits and vegetables, for instance. Where do they come from? Plants, of course! What are the sources of rice or wheat? You may have seen paddy or wheat fields with rows and rows of plants, which give us these grains. And then, there are food items like milk, eggs, meat, chicken, fish, prawns, beef, pork and such others, which come from animals.
Plants are the sources of food ingredients like grains, cereals, vegetables and fruits. Animals provide us with milk, meat products and eggs. Cows, goats and buffaloes are some common animals which give us milk. Milk and milk products like butter, cream, cheese and curd are used all over the world.
Ex 1.3 – Plant Parts And Animal Products As Food
Plants are one source of our food. Which parts of a plant are these?
We eat many leafy vegetables. We eat fruits from some plants. Sometimes roots, sometimes stems and even flowers. Some plants have two or more edible (edible) parts. Seeds of mustard plants give us oil and the leaves are used as a vegetable.
Ex 1.4 – Plant Parts As Food
- Roots: beets, carrots, radishes, turnips, ginger,
- Stems: broccoli stem, bamboo shoots, sugar cane, potato
- Leaves: spinach, lettuce etc.
- Fruits: apple, pear, tomatoes, grapes, cherries, oranges
- Edible Flowers: broccoli heads, cauliflower heads
- Seeds: sunflower seeds
Ex 1.5 – What Do Animals Eat?
Different animals consume different food materials. Depending upon the food that animals eat, we can classify them into the following:
- Herbivores animals: These animals eat only plants and plant products. For example, goats, cow, horse, monkey, sheep, panda, etc. eat different parts of a plant such as leaves, hay, fruits and so on.
- Carnivores animals: These animals eat other animals. They hunt animals to obtain food. Example: Lions, Tigers, Cheetah, etc.
- Omnivores animals: These animals eat both animals and plants. Example: Raccoons, crows, bears, etc.
- Some other organisms, i.e., microbes decompose food from the dead matter of plants and animals. Example: Bacteria, Fungi
It is important to know that there is a difference between vegetarians and herbivores. While vegetarians make a conscious decision to not eat meat, herbivores on the other hand are incapable of eating meat and dairy products. Similarly carnivores lack the necessary enzymes in their stomachs to digest cellulose which is a major component of green food like grass.
