Olympiad Exams in Myanmar 2026: Guide & 20 Solved Questions

A student in Yangon might discover a number pattern by arranging pencils. A young learner in Mandalay might work out the change from a pretend shop purchase. A teenager learning at home can solve an algebra puzzle with a notebook, even when internet access is limited. Strong Olympiad preparation starts with understanding, not with a registration form. This updated 2026 guide brings together practical learning ideas for children in Myanmar (မြန်မာနိုင်ငံ), information from education and competition sources, twenty original questions with worked answers and useful advice for families whose school arrangements may differ.

Three routes to learning — and why they should not be confused

Children may learn through school lessons, take an independently organised mathematics contest or eventually qualify for a national team. These routes have different rules. There is no single ‘Myanmar Olympiad examination’ open to all grades, subjects and locations under one organiser.

What to know about schooling and access in Myanmar

Myanmar’s Ministry of Education materials refer to a Kindergarten-to-Grade-12 basic education curriculum. Its curriculum page includes selected new-system Grade 10 subjects, including Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and English, together with some older-system materials. That is a useful reference, but it does not mean every student across Myanmar has the same textbook, school schedule or convenient access to the same lessons.

Many families face barriers beyond syllabus choice. UNICEF Myanmar’s learning programme reports that conflict, insecurity, displacement and disasters continue to interrupt education, affecting millions of children. Its support includes flexible formal and non-formal education and individual learning materials. Families should prioritise safety, continuity, accessibility and emotional wellbeing. An optional Olympiad is never more important than a safe opportunity to learn.

If the internet is unreliable, choose an offline-friendly routine: a few copied practice questions, a pencil, a short teacher-approved lesson and a shared discussion. You do not need constant screen time or paid dashboards to learn how to explain a problem. Use a familiar language, including Burmese, for discussion when that helps a child understand; verify actual test-language rules separately before considering a contest.

2026 competition information: real opportunities and important date checks

Official International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)

Myanmar participated in the 2026 official International Mathematical Olympiad. Its verified 2026 team results list six contestants, a team rank of 91st and two honourable mentions. This competition is organised around national teams, not open individual online registration for children of every age. SCO’s independent ‘International Maths Olympiad’ name must not be confused with the true IMO or represented as a national qualification pathway.

Myanmar Mathematics Olympiad (MMO) listed for September 2026

The Myanmar Olympiads Network’s 2026 MMO page advertised a Grades 1–10 competition for 13 September 2026, with an enrolment deadline of 15 August 2026 and a listed fee of 50,000 Myanmar kyat (MMK). The page describes online and on-campus possibilities, with venues in Yangon, Mandalay and Taunggyi. These dates are already past as of 18 October 2026. A historical listing can help families identify the organiser, but it does not establish a new 2027 registration, guaranteed location or current price. Check the provider’s latest announcement before making plans.

AI and informatics: check the current accreditation

The International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence’s countries list names Myanmar Olympiads Network as a previous Myanmar accreditation contact but currently labels that entry expired. It would be misleading to promise that selecting an online AI contest automatically offers a current official IOAI team route. For programming practice, children can still explore algorithms and logical thinking independently, then confirm any actual national selection scheme with the current organiser.

Which subjects can students practise?

Learning areaPrimary-school ideasOlder students can explore
MathematicsCounting, shapes, equal groups, time and money stories.Fractions, algebra, geometry, probability and multi-step proofs.
SciencePlants, safe observations, states of water, shadows and healthy habits.Fair tests, speed, density, forces, cells and interpreting evidence.
EnglishShort stories, vocabulary, grammar and reading aloud.Inference, sentence structure, precise word choice and comprehension.
Coding and reasoningPatterns, ordering simple instructions and finding the next step.Algorithms, loops, logic, error checking and problem decomposition.

These are broad ideas for extra learning, not a claim that each topic falls in a particular Myanmar term or a verified national Olympiad syllabus. Follow the student’s own teacher-approved curriculum first. SCO ‘Class’ numbers, Myanmar Grade labels and international-school years may not align perfectly.

Five practical mini-lessons for home or school

1. Younger Maths learners: build ten and count on

Imagine nine pencils on a desk and eight more inside a box. Rather than counting all from one, move a single pencil to make ten, then count the seven remaining: ten plus seven equals seventeen. Children can learn place value with pencils, paper squares or safely handled counters. This method is helpful in any school system.

Try it together: Draw two piles of dots: 9 and 8. Show one way to rearrange them into 10 and 7.

2. Middle-primary Maths: pretend prices in kyat

Two imaginary notebooks cost 1,200 MMK each. Their total is 2,400 MMK. This is a classroom story, not a current retail price, inflation measure or real fee. The learner can check by repeated addition, multiplying 12 by two and then restoring two zeros, or imagining two groups of one thousand two hundred.

Try it together: Make a pretend price list with round numbers, then add two items and calculate change.

3. Science: a fair comparison is better than a guess

If we want to know whether light helps seedlings grow, we should compare plants of similar age and kind, with the same soil and water as far as possible, and change the light. Keep the activity safe, simple and supervised. What would you measure—a plant’s height, leaf count or visible colour? Observations help us test a prediction.

Try it together: Draw two columns labelled ‘same conditions’ and ‘condition we change’. No special equipment is needed.

4. Older Maths: solve an equation and check it

Suppose 2x + 9 = 31. Subtract nine from both sides to get 2x = 22; divide by two to find x = 11. To check, substitute eleven: 2 × 11 + 9 = 31. A correct result with an explained method is more valuable than choosing option C by chance.

Try it together: Invent another equation with a whole-number answer, solve it and substitute the answer to check.

5. English and reasoning: explain the clue

In the sentence ‘The children are drawing’, the plural subject ‘children’ requires ‘are’. For a pattern such as 2, 5, 11, 23, each term is double the previous one plus one; the next number is 47. Explain the clue in everyday language. Students can discuss the idea in a familiar language before practising the written answer in English.

Try it together: Write a pattern for a friend and a sentence with a missing verb. Ask how they know the answer, not just what it is.

20 original practice questions with worked explanations

These twenty new questions were created for this education guide. They are not from a Myanmar school examination, the Myanmar Mathematics Olympiad, a national-team IMO or IOAI paper, or an SCO examination. Each question has a suggested grade. Learners should select only questions that match their current level; early questions are meant for building confidence, while secondary questions introduce deeper reasoning.

Question 1 (Maths · Grade 1). A child has 9 drawing pencils and finds 8 more. How many pencils now?

A. 17   |   B. 16   |   C. 18   |   D. 19

Answer: A — 17. 9 + 8 = 17. Make ten first: 9 + 1 + 7 = 17.

Question 2 (Maths · Grade 2). There are 52 paper stars. Children use 27. How many remain?

A. 35   |   B. 25   |   C. 29   |   D. 79

Answer: B — 25. 52 − 27 = 25. Check that 25 + 27 = 52.

Question 3 (Maths · Grade 3). Five baskets hold nine oranges each. How many oranges in total?

A. 14   |   B. 40   |   C. 45   |   D. 54

Answer: C — 45. Five groups of nine make 5 × 9 = 45 oranges.

Question 4 (Maths · Grade 4). A fictional notebook costs 1,200 MMK. Two notebooks cost how much?

A. 1,400 MMK   |   B. 2,200 MMK   |   C. 3,200 MMK   |   D. 2,400 MMK

Answer: D — 2,400 MMK. 2 × 1,200 = 2,400 MMK. These are pretend learning prices, not current shop prices.

Question 5 (Maths · Grade 5). A rectangle is 10 cm long and 6 cm wide. What is its perimeter?

A. 32 cm   |   B. 60 cm   |   C. 16 cm   |   D. 26 cm

Answer: A — 32 cm. Perimeter means adding all sides: 10 + 6 + 10 + 6 = 32 cm.

Question 6 (Maths · Grade 6). What is 20% of 150?

A. 20   |   B. 30   |   C. 35   |   D. 75

Answer: B — 30. Twenty per cent is one-fifth: 150 ÷ 5 = 30.

Mathematics for older grades

Question 7 (Maths · Grade 7). Solve 2x + 9 = 31.

A. 10   |   B. 12   |   C. 11   |   D. 20

Answer: C — 11. Subtract 9 to get 2x = 22. Divide by 2 to find x = 11.

Question 8 (Maths · Grade 8). What is the area of a triangle with base 14 cm and perpendicular height 5 cm?

A. 70 cm²   |   B. 19 cm²   |   C. 28 cm²   |   D. 35 cm²

Answer: D — 35 cm². Area = 1/2 × base × height = 1/2 × 14 × 5 = 35 cm².

Question 9 (Maths · Grade 9). A right triangle has shorter sides 9 cm and 12 cm. Find the hypotenuse.

A. 15 cm   |   B. 21 cm   |   C. 18 cm   |   D. 12 cm

Answer: A — 15 cm. Using Pythagoras, c² = 9² + 12² = 81 + 144 = 225, so c = 15 cm.

Question 10 (Maths · Grade 10). A bag contains 2 red and 6 green counters. What is the chance of picking a green counter?

A. 1/4   |   B. 3/4   |   C. 2/3   |   D. 1/2

Answer: B — 3/4. There are 6 green of 8 equally likely counters. 6/8 simplifies to 3/4.

Science: notice, compare, explain

Question 11 (Science · Grade 2). Which part of a plant usually absorbs water from soil?

A. Leaves   |   B. Flowers   |   C. Roots   |   D. Fruit

Answer: C — Roots. Roots absorb water and help hold a plant in place.

Question 12 (Science · Grade 3). What do we call water vapour cooling and changing into liquid droplets?

A. Melting   |   B. Freezing   |   C. Evaporation   |   D. Condensation

Answer: D — Condensation. Condensation occurs when water vapour cools and becomes tiny liquid droplets.

Question 13 (Science · Grade 4). To compare the effect of light on seedlings, what should stay as alike as possible?

A. Soil and water conditions   |   B. All conditions must change   |   C. Only the names of plants   |   D. The time of day must be different

Answer: A — Soil and water conditions. A fair comparison changes light while keeping plant type, water and soil reasonably alike.

Question 14 (Science · Grade 5). In a simple food chain, which living thing is usually a producer?

A. A grasshopper   |   B. A green plant   |   C. A frog   |   D. A bird

Answer: B — A green plant. A green plant makes its food using light, so it is a producer.

Question 15 (Science · Grade 6). A toy car moves 72 metres in 12 seconds at constant speed. What is its speed?

A. 12 m/s   |   B. 60 m/s   |   C. 6 m/s   |   D. 864 m/s

Answer: C — 6 m/s. Speed is distance divided by time: 72 ÷ 12 = 6 m/s.

Question 16 (Science · Grade 7). A small object has mass 120 g and volume 40 cm³. What is its density?

A. 160 g/cm³   |   B. 0.33 g/cm³   |   C. 80 g/cm³   |   D. 3 g/cm³

Answer: D — 3 g/cm³. Density = mass/volume = 120/40 = 3 grams per cubic centimetre.

English and reasoning

Question 17 (English · Grade 3). Choose the correct sentence.

A. The children are drawing.   |   B. The children is drawing.   |   C. The childrens are draw.   |   D. The children draws yesterday.

Answer: A — The children are drawing.. Children is a plural noun, so ‘are drawing’ is correct in the present continuous tense.

Question 18 (English · Grade 4). Which word is closest in meaning to ‘enormous’?

A. Tiny   |   B. Huge   |   C. Short   |   D. Narrow

Answer: B — Huge. Enormous means very large. Huge has nearly the same meaning.

Question 19 (Reasoning · Grade 5). Complete this pattern: 2, 5, 11, 23, __.

A. 35   |   B. 46   |   C. 47   |   D. 49

Answer: C — 47. Each step doubles the previous number and adds 1. So 23 × 2 + 1 = 47.

Question 20 (Reasoning · Grade 7). All equilateral triangles are triangles. Shape A is equilateral. Which conclusion is certain?

A. Shape A is a square   |   B. Shape A has four sides   |   C. Shape A must be a circle   |   D. Shape A is a triangle

Answer: D — Shape A is a triangle. Equilateral describes a triangle whose sides have equal lengths. It is still a triangle.

A flexible four-week preparation plan

WeekWhat to learnOffline-friendly activity
1 — Choose a starting pointFind the child’s actual grade, current book and two topics they want to understand.Read or copy five suitable questions into a notebook, then discuss three together.
2 — Build understandingUse drawings, equal groups, simple observations and clear explanations.Create a number pattern and draw one safe Science fair test.
3 — Practise with feedbackTry a few class-appropriate sample questions before looking at explanations.Write down one mistaken method and a better approach, without shame.
4 — Apply and explainReturn to difficult concepts, check answers and build confidence.Teach one solved problem to a parent, sibling or classmate.

When learning has been interrupted, a flexible plan is better than a rigid deadline. Even short sessions can be valuable when a child feels safe and supported. Younger learners may prefer a few minutes of play; older students can use longer sessions when circumstances allow. There is no educational need to pay for a mock test before practising foundational concepts.

How School Connect Olympiad fits into Myanmar learning

School Connect Olympiad provides independent subject pages in Maths, Science, English, Coding and other areas. It is not Myanmar’s school examination authority, the official IMO or the Myanmar Mathematics Olympiad organiser. School Connect Olympiad provides free chapter-wise learning materials, linked educational videos and practice questions. The learning resources are continually updated and improved. Students can learn at their own pace. Check their own curriculum and any separate event’s grade and language rules before registration.

The SCO WINTER 2027 subject calendar lists general sessions in October–December 2026. That does not confirm a locally available seat, reliable internet connection, supported payment channel or Myanmar-specific exam timing. Nor is an MMK checkout fee established by its public INR/USD comparison. Anyone considering an independent examination should first check the current registration form and suitability for their actual circumstances. Families who prefer the educational activities on this page can use them without enrolling.

Frequently asked questions from families in Myanmar

What school-grade system is used in Myanmar in 2026?

Myanmar’s 2026–27 basic education documents describe Kindergarten through Grade 12. Schools and alternative learning programmes may use different curricula or teaching arrangements, so families should check the child’s real grade and textbook rather than assume an international ‘Class’ is identical.

Where can we check Myanmar’s curriculum materials?

The Ministry of Education’s curriculum pages show selected new-system subjects, including Grade 10 Maths, English, Biology and Physics. They are not a complete assurance that every grade’s full textbook can be downloaded. Ask a teacher for approved materials that suit the child.

What learning support exists for children whose schooling has been interrupted?

UNICEF Myanmar describes formal and non-formal education support, flexible home and community learning, individual learning materials and temporary learning spaces. Contact trusted local educators or the UNICEF Myanmar information pages rather than relying only on competition websites.

Does Myanmar participate in the official International Mathematical Olympiad?

Yes. Official IMO results show Myanmar sent six contestants to the 2026 IMO, placed 91st and earned two honourable mentions. This is an invited national-team event requiring selection; it is not a walk-in public online test.

What is the Myanmar Mathematics Olympiad listed for 2026?

Myanmar Olympiads Network listed a Myanmar Mathematics Olympiad for Grades 1–10 on 13 September 2026 with a 15 August deadline and 50,000 MMK fee. Both dates have passed as of 18 October 2026, so that listing does not confirm a new registration window.

Can students enter the international AI Olympiad through a Myanmar route?

The official IOAI countries listing names Myanmar Olympiads Network but currently labels its accreditation ‘expired’. Families should not interpret an old listing as current eligibility and should confirm an active selection route with the official organiser.

Is SCO the same as Myanmar’s Mathematics Olympiad or official national-team IMO?

No. School Connect Olympiad is an independent school-level programme. Myanmar Olympiads Network events and the official national-team International Mathematical Olympiad have separate organisers, selection systems, fees and rules.

Are international-school students eligible for every local event?

Not automatically. Each competition sets its grade, proof-of-enrolment, language, location and payment requirements. Myanmar Mathematics Olympiad’s 2026 listing includes specific school-enrolment evidence rules that should not be assumed for another programme.

Can families pay SCO registration fees in Myanmar kyat?

SCO’s public registration page lists available pricing options in INR and USD. A specific MMK price or successful cross-border payment route is not verified; check an actual supported payment method and final terms before attempting a purchase.

Does a public exam date mean a guaranteed online seat in Myanmar?

No. A published SCO subject date or historic local Olympiad schedule does not prove local availability, a working payment channel, permitted language, connectivity, access accommodation or registration confirmation.

Are all online sample papers and mock tests free?

School Connect Olympiad provides free chapter-wise learning materials, linked educational videos and practice questions. The learning resources are continually updated and improved. A particular timed exam or student-specific competition report may be separate; check its current availability rather than relying on an obsolete plan listing.

Are the questions here from a real Myanmar Olympiad paper?

No. All twenty multiple-choice questions and explanations are original educational exercises. They are not official Myanmar exam, MMO, IMO, IOAI or SCO examination material.

A little understanding today is meaningful progress

Some learners have regular classroom support. Others must adapt their learning around travel, interrupted classes or changes at home. Both deserve encouragement and appropriate materials. Begin with a schoolbook, a safe place to practise and one problem that invites a clear explanation. For additional optional subject practice, the School Connect learning directory can be explored after checking the child’s grade and access conditions. Every thoughtfully solved question is progress, with or without an Olympiad result.
