Olympiad tests have recently been made mandatory in all schools. Students are exposed to national competitions from an early age. Science Olympiad exams emphasize concept-based learning and logical thinking, and they allow students to compete while also helping them better understand their own abilities in any subject. This article is all about science chapter 5 for class 3: Housing and clothing.

The Science Olympiad is a well-known test that is held all over India. This test is divided into two levels. The first level consists of fundamental scientific principles. At the second level, students are tested on sophisticated scientific theories. Students who pass the first round of the Olympiad exam progress to the second round.

HOUSES

We need a place to live. Our house shields us from the elements, including heat, cold, storms, and rain. It also keeps animals and thieves at bay. We see various types of houses all around us. The types of houses we build are determined by our requirements. A kachcha house is constructed of mud and straw. It is mostly found in villages. It’s not very powerful. A pakka house is constructed with bricks, iron, wood, glass, and cement. It’s mostly found in cities. It is extremely powerful. A pakka house is also a multi-story building. It has several levels. Several families can live on different floors.

SPECIAL HOUSES

Nomads are people who move from one location to another. They reside in canvas tents or caravans. People who live in extremely cold climates construct snow houses. These structures are known as igloos. Houses built on wooden posts can be found in flood-prone areas. These structures are known as stilt houses.

A GOOD HOUSE

A good house should have everything we need to feel safe and comfortable. A good home should have the following characteristics:

  • It should have plenty of windows and doors for ventilation. It should get plenty of sunlight and fresh air. The sun kills germs and keeps rooms dry. We are healthier when we breathe clean, fresh air.
  • Wire netting should be installed around the windows and doors. This keeps flies and mosquitoes at bay while allowing air and sunlight to pass through.
  • It should have a proper wire netting that keeps flies and mosquitoes away from the drainage system. To keep mosquitoes away, the drains carrying water from the kitchen and bathroom should be properly covered. The kitchen and bathroom floors should be sloped to allow water to drain easily.
  • It should have open areas such as a verandah, a courtyard, and balconies. Veranda balconies allow for plenty of fresh air and space for children to play.

We need to keep our homes clean. Some insects, such as mosquitoes, houseflies, and cockroaches, transmit diseases and make us sick. We can get rid of them by cleaning our house on a regular basis.

To keep our house clean, we should do the following:

  • Furniture should be regularly dusted and cleaned.

  • Bed linens and curtains must be washed on a regular basis.
  • A tidy home indicates a healthy and happy family.

FIBRES AND CLOTHES

To cover their bodies, early humans used leaves and the skin of dead animals. Nowadays, we wear clothes not only to cover our bodies but also to express ourselves.

  • In the winter, we keep ourselves warm.
  • In the summer, we should protect ourselves from the sun’s heat.
  • We should take precautions against rain and insect bites.
  • You look good.

Fibers

Fibers are used to make clothing. There are two kinds of fibers:

a) Natural fibers

Plants and animals both provide natural fibers. Cotton and jute are natural fibers. Wool and silk are both made from animals.

b) Synthetic (human-made)

Human-made or synthetic fibers are those created in factories by humans. Synthetic fibers include nylon, terrycot, and polyester.

Sana discovers her mother packing woollen clothes as winter comes to an end. We are told that these are woollen garments worn during the winter. Wollen clothing does not allow body heat to escape, keeping us warm. People who live in areas that are extremely cold due to heavy snowfall wear fur clothing. They stay warm by wearing fur clothing. When it’s hot, we dress in light-colored linen or cotton. They allow body heat to escape while also keeping

We use raincoats, umbrellas, and gumboots when it rains. These are made of a material that prevents water from passing through. This is known as waterproof material. This material keeps us dry and keeps the rain at bay.
