Dos & Don’ts for Parents to help kids with online school

How often do we come across kids with phones or tablets in their hand?

Today every child has access to the web and internet with the availability of mobile phones, tablets, and other Wi-Fi connected devices.  With these, children can surf the web at any time of the day, at any given hour from anywhere. And like everything else, there are advantages and disadvantages of the digital age too.

Parents and guardians face various issues with the increasing digital usage of children. Children today are basically ‘growing up digitally’.

Here are 6 tips for parenting in the digital age :

1. Demonstrate Moderation :

As parents, if you are constantly using your phones then that is exactly what your child will learn from you. Children look up to their parents in all matters.  If there is limited screen time for kids, then they will insist their parents face the same limitation. After all, it’s only fair.

2. Set An Example :

Be a good role model for your kids online and offline. Practice good manners and etiquettes online. Be on your best behaviour by showing kindness. This will encourage your child to be kind. If you’re constantly using your phones in front of children, they may feel that they are not a priority. Show them you are available to play with them, talk and interact instead of using your phone.

3. Set Limits :

Limiting screen time is the foremost thing parents need to do. Allocate time to each kid for using the phone. Let them decide whether they want to play a game or watch a cartoon. Do not keep any room for negotiation while deciding the screen time. Be strict and ensure kids adhere to their set screen time.

4. Keep Yourself Informed :

As parents, keep yourself informed at all times regarding what apps your child is watching, what games he/she plays, what sites they visit and what they do online.

5. Create Tech-free Zones :

Set out clear guidelines as to where your child cannot use phones or tablets. This includes the dinner table. This will encourage kids to involve in communications at family gatherings.  Ban technology from the children bedroom. Keep all the devices in some other room. If the children can see the devices in their room, they will not be able to resist using them. These changes encourage more family time, healthier eating habits, and better sleeping habits.

6. Warn Children About The Importance of Privacy :

Children need to be taught that they should not use personal pictures or any personal information and share it on the web. It can be used in the wrong way. Children need to be warned that sex offenders often use social networking, chat rooms, e-mail, and online gaming to contact and exploit children.

Conclusion :

Technological devices can be used to encourage family time too. It can be a great way to spend time with your kids. Watch a movie or play a game with them. Screen time doesn’t translate alone time. It can be family time too. Take the opportunity to create memories with your children.

You know they’ll like it and have fun.

Every parent would know what is in the best interest of their child. Despite the harms, there are various benefits of children having access to digital media. Focus on the positives and remember that technology usage in the digital age is inevitable. As long as you are doing your duty as a parent of protecting your child in the best possible way, you have it all sorted.
