The International English Olympiad (IEO) is an academic competition for students in grades one through twelve. The IEO test, administered by the Science Olympiad Foundation in collaboration with the British Council, is a grammar competition. Previously, IEO was a single-level exam; however, in 2017-18, it was changed to a two-level exam. The first level of the test is held during school hours in the participants’ respective schools. Level 2 is for students in grades 3 through 12.

The School connect online IEO exam is a 60-minute objective-type test with 35 questions for classes 1–4 and 50 questions for classes 5–12. The School connect online International English Olympiad syllabus is based on the school curriculum. We will go over the IEO Class 6 Syllabus in depth.

The IEO Course Syllabus

The IEO program is designed to assess a student’s fundamental English skills. Its purpose is to improve a student’s English language skills by posing a variety of questions. All of the question papers on School Connect Online are classified based on their difficulty. The syllabus for IEO is the same from grade to grade, but the level of problems varies. The purpose of the question paper is to assess a student’s comprehension of:

• Grasp of word and structure
• Reading Expansion, both oral and written
• Expansion in both spoken and written form

Class 6th Syllabus

Adjectives

This topic delves into the concept of Adjectives, which are words that are used to describe or modify other words. You will become much more specific and intriguing in your writing and speaking. It is one of the most important issues in English. Adjectives include phrases such as “pink clothing,” “sorrowful boy,” and so on.

Adverbs 

Adverbs You will learn about adverbs in this article. It is a section of the speech that goes into great detail about a verb, phrase, clause, or sentence. Although the majority of adverbs end in -ly, several are synonymous with their adjective counterparts. Adverbs include phrases such as quickly, slowly, loudly, and so on.

Articles

This important topic from the IEO Class 6 Syllabus deals with the concept of an Article, which indicates whether something is specific or general. There are two types of articles: Definite Articles and Indefinite Articles. Definite Article Example: ‘The’ youngster is fleeing. As an example of an indefinite article, I’m eating ‘an’ apple.

Comprehension

This article explains why it is critical to read and connect words to form a good sentence. Because comprehension is the goal of reading, you must ensure that the words you are reading make sense and are linked. If you practice comprehension, you will become a more intentional and active reader.

Conjunctions

This chapter will teach you about a part of speech that is used to join phrases, sentences, clauses, and words together. Conjunctions are thought to be invariable grammar particles because they can exist between the items they connect. But, and, yet, or, because, nor, and although are examples of conjunctions.

Idioms and Phrases

Idioms and phrases are covered in this unit of the IEO Syllabus for Class 6. They are a group of words with a well-known symbolic connotation. Such expressions are not taken literally because they would be amusing. Idioms and phrases are idioms and phrases, respectively. A piece of the cake represents a simple activity or labour.

Integrated Grammar Exercises I & II

Integrated Grammar is all about creative expression, in a nutshell. It covers jumbled phrases, understands the intended meaning, and correctly arranges sentences. The topic also includes editing, omitting, gap filling, and other activities to assess your knowledge of various subjects.

Pronouns and Nouns

Because it covers both nouns and pronouns, it is one of the most important topics in English. You will learn how to use nouns and pronouns without repeating the noun. For example, I, me, you, he, she, it, and so forth. Kabir, in a nutshell, noticed Lisa and waved to her. Kabir is a noun as well as a pronoun.

Prepositions

According to the IEO Class 6 Syllabus, prepositions are words that connect nouns, pronouns, and phrases to other words within a single sentence. They are mostly short words that go before nouns. The words at, on, in, before, and after are examples of prepositions.

 Reported Speech

This article will teach you about reported speech, also referred to as indirect speech. It is used to convey what someone has said without using the exact words they used. Some changes are necessary; frequently, a pronoun must be replaced, and the verb is usually pushed back a tense where necessary.

Sequencing of Sentences

This lesson will teach you the fundamental concept of sentences and how they convey important meaning while carrying a set of words. You will learn how to deal with statements that are mentioned incorrectly and make no sense. Furthermore, sentence sequencing assigns the correct order or sequence to active and passive voice sentences. Active voice sentences have a subject that acts on its verb, whereas passive voice sentences have a subject that is a receiver of a verb’s action. You’ll learn to distinguish between active and passive voice sentences.

Tips for Exam Preparation for the IEO

• Look through the entire curriculum for resources to help you learn the various IEO subjects. 70% of the questions in the first level are taken from the previous class’s curriculum.
• Grammar requires a lot of effort, and you must be able to use grammar in unusual ways. Working hard and covering all bases will help you understand the principles. It will give you the confidence and skills you need to tackle any English question.
• Understanding difficult English problems necessitates remaining calm, collected, and relaxed. Do not overwork yourself in the days preceding your exams. Get plenty of rest the night before the exam.
• Examine previous years’ question papers to gain a thorough understanding of the exam pattern and marks.
• Make a timetable. It must be strictly followed.

The IEO for class 6 consists of 50 questions worth a total of 60 points. The IEO class 6 is divided into the following sections:

The word and the structure of words:  The knowledge section assesses a student’s grammatical knowledge on various topics of English Grammar, primarily through fill-in-the-blanks exercises. Detecting errors, Vocabulary

Reading – This section requires candidates to deduce relevant details from the given passage while also using their reading skills to answer correctly.

Spoken and written expression – This section assesses a candidate’s command of the English language. This section assesses the student’s oral and written communication abilities.

Achiever’s Section – The Achiever’s Section consists of high order thinking questions designed to assess the candidate’s thinking ability.
