Singapore Physics Olympiad (SPhO)
The Singapore Physics Olympiad (SPhO) is a prestigious examination organised and overseen by the Institute of Physics Singapore (IPS) and supported by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in Singapore.(Singapore Physics Olympiad (SPhO))
The primary goal of the SPhO is to inspire and challenge young minds in the field of Physics, encouraging them to showcase their knowledge and talent beyond the confines of the standard curriculum.

Key Features of SPhO:
Participants:
- The SPhO is an open competition for secondary school students (typically Secondary 3 to 5) and junior colleges (Pre-University 1 and 2 levels). Schools encourage their students to participate in this prestigious competition. Students in Singapore take part in this exam because of their deep interest in the field of Physics.
SPhO Exam Format:
- First Round: This is the preliminary round where participants all across Singapore participate, this round is conducted in schools. The exam is generally conducted to select top performers.
- Second Round: Performers from Round 1 participate in the second round of the written test, which is more challenging. It aims to examine participants’ ability to solve and understand advanced concepts and their problem-solving skills.
Topics Covered:
The syllabus for SPhO covers advanced and fundamental topics in physics, including Thermal Physics, electricity and magnetism, Optics, waves and oscillation, Modern Physics, fluid mechanics, and more.

SPhO Preparation:
To prepare for SPhO, participants should solve the previous year’s papers to grasp the difficulty level and exam format. The SPhO curriculum goes beyond the regular school curriculum, and mastery comes through practising questions of that difficulty level. Additionally, attending training camps or workshops organized by IPS or other educational institutions is always beneficial.
Note: Students are encouraged to practice extensively. The SCO Olympiad offers over 100,000 questions for free, also allowing students to access challenging questions and compete with 400,000 other students.
Recognition and Awards:
Students who demonstrate outstanding performance are recognized with awards and certificates of achievement. Exceptional achievers may even have the opportunity to represent Singapore in the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO).
Objectives:
The main goal of SPhO is to spark students’ interest and excitement in physics in Singapore and to prepare them through rigorous workshops to participate in IPhO. The aim is to represent Singapore on the national platform and promote excellence in physics among students in Singaporean schools.
Importance and Impact:
Participation in SPhO enables individuals to gauge and enhance their physics expertise, leading to potential academic recognition, international exposure, and a greater understanding of physics concepts.
SPhO plays a crucial role in nurturing future innovators in the physics field by inspiring students to delve into the stimulating realms of physics and its practical applications.
