The Singapore Mathematical Olympiad (SMO) is a prestigious competition designed to push students to excel in solving challenging mathematical problems.(Singapore Mathematical Olympiad (SMO))

It aims to cultivate students’ skills to tackle advanced mathematical challenges and prepare them to represent the country at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

Important features of the SMO:

1. Participating Categories:

  • Participation Junior Section: For Secondary 1 and 2 (equivalent to Grades 7 and 8).
  • Participation Senior Section: For Secondary 3 and 4 (equivalent to Grades 9 and 10).
  • Participation Open Section: For Junior College students and equivalent (Grades 11 and 12).

2. SMO Competition Format:

  • SMO Round 1: Round 1, is a written test with multiple-choice and short-answer questions.
  • SMO Round 2: Round 2, is a written test with more difficult, proof-based problems, only students who qualify for Round 1 participate in Round 2.

3. SMO Content and Structure:

  • All Mathematical problems are designed to examine the deep understanding, and creativity in the approach to solving questions, and to test deep skill in various areas of mathematics like Algebra, geometry, number theory and more
  • The questions are created to challenge participants to their highest difficulty level.

  • To excel in math competitions, students typically engage in school mathematics programs, take part in specialized training sessions, and become members of math clubs.
  • Students must use SMO papers to prepare and check exam patterns, different mathematics Olympiad books, and online resources like the SCO Olympiad exam and its practice papers.

  • Register for the online mathematics Olympiad for exam practice and preparation.

3. Qualifying Rounds:

  • For Round 1, all registered participants enter a qualifying level. Once selected, they proceed to Round 2, the final round.
