Bangladesh Biology Olympiad (BdBO)
The Bangladesh Biology Olympiad (BdBO) is an annual competition to promote Biology study and its understanding among high school students in Bangladesh. Bangladesh Biology Olympiad (BdBO) is a renowned platform where students participate to compete and earn recognition to represent the country in the International platform i.e., International Biology Olympiad (IBO).

Overview of BdBO
Foundation and Purpose:
- The foundation of the Bangladesh Biology Olympiad (BdBO) laid down to create learning and competition towards Biology and identification of young talent in the country.
- With a purpose to increase the quality of Biology students and encourage students to establish careers in the field of biology.
Organization:
- Organized by the Bangladesh Biology Olympiad Committee (BdBOC).
- Supported by various educational institutions and leading academic institutions.
Structure of the Competition:
- Regional Olympiads: Students compete at the regional level to qualify for National Level.
- National Olympiad: The top performers from the regional competitions compete at the national level.
- Training Camps: All the selected candidates participate in intensive training sessions to prepare for the international competition.
Participation and Eligibility Criteria:
- All high school students across Bangladesh can participate in this exam.
- The exam is divided into different categories with varying educational levels.
Content and Syllabus:
- The syllabus of the Bangladesh Biology Olympiad (BdBO) covers many areas of Biology, which includes cell biology, genetics, evolution, ecology, physiology, and plant and animal biology.
- Cell biology and biochemistry including microbiology & biotechnology (কোষবিদ্যা এবং প্রাণরসায়ন – অনুপ্রাণবিজ্ঞান ও জীবপ্রযুক্তি সহ) — 20% marks
- Plant anatomy and physiology with emphasis on seed plants (উদ্ভিদ অঙ্গসংস্থানবিদ্যা এবং শারীরতত্ত্ব – বীজধারী উদ্ভিদকে গুরুত্ব দিয়ে) — 15% marks
- Animal anatomy and physiology with emphasis on vertebrates and especially man (প্রাণী অঙ্গসংস্থানবিদ্যা এবং শারীরতত্ত্ব – মেরুদণ্ডী প্রাণীদের বিশেষত মানুষকে গুরুত্ব দিয়ে) — 25% marks
- Ethology (প্রাণি-আচরণবিদ্যা) — 5% marks
- Genetics and Evolution (বংশগতিবিদ্যা এবং জৈব অভিব্যক্তি) — 20% marks
- Ecology (বাস্তুসংস্থান) — 10% marks
- Biosystematics, including bioinformatics (জীব-শ্রেণিকরণবিদ্যা, বায়োইনফরমেটিক্স সহ) — 5% marks
- It’s recommended all students follow the details of the comprehensive syllabus, click here.
- The content and syllabus of the Bangladesh Biology Olympiad (BdBO) emphasizes theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and problem-solving abilities.
Questions Pattern and Marking Scheme:
- The questions are of multiple response (True/False) type.
- Every exam has two items: stem and alternatives.
- The stem could include descriptions, graphs, pictures, and experimental results. It will have boosting effects. Then, as alternatives, there will be four statements that are taken from the stem. Every claim has the potential to be true or false.
- Candidates are required to indicate their answers using “T” for True or “F” for False by writing, ticking, or filling circles accordingly. Each item can be answered with combinations like TTTT, TTTF, TTFF, TFFF, FFFF, FFFT, FFTT, FTTT, FTFT, TFTF, FTTF, TFFT, TFTT, FTFF, TTFT, or FFTF. Regardless of the combination, all four circles under a single item must be filled separately. No points will be deducted for an incorrect response.
- You will receive five (five) points if you successfully answer each of the four options for a given exam item.
- Three correct responses to a test item will earn 3 (three) points.
- You will earn 1 point for every two questions answered correctly in each exam item.
- No extra point will be awarded to students for making just one correct response as it can be mostly done by wild guessing of true or false at random.
- A minimum of thirty (thirty) of these test items. All of those must be completed in an hour or in a time frame that is mandated by Bangladesh Biology Olympiad.
Impact:
- This exam has a national impact in creating a pool of talent with interest in the field of Biology
- Promotes a greater awareness for and understanding of biology with active competition in Bangladesh and the International Platform.
- Provides students with opportunities to compete internationally and gain recognition.
Preparation for BdBO
- Study Materials: Follow the questions of School Connect Olympiad – Science Olympiad questions and past papers from BdBO and IBO.
- More in-depth learning from renowned books such as “Campbell Biology” by Reece, Urry, Cain, Wasserman, Minorsky, and Jackson.
- Resources on biological problem-solving techniques, real-life biology-related problems and laboratory practices.
Training Programs:
- Students are encouraged to participate in local and regional communities prioritizing Biology and its fest and various clubs and online study groups.
- Attending and following various preparatory courses and workshops to challenge the enquiries of Biology.
Practice:
- Regular study and practice of theoretical, case studies, research papers and experimental biology problems.
- Participating in the team to solve complex problems related to Biology.
Achievements
- It is evident that Bangladesh has progressively improved and earned many accolades and recognition for its performance in the IBO.
- The BdBO has significantly contributed to raising the standard of biology education in Bangladesh and inspiring students to excel in the field.
